Who is Tesco Bank?

Tesco Bank car insurance was set up in 1997. Tesco became one of the first major UK supermarkets to launch its own bank. Tesco Bank was a joint venture between the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and Tesco.

Tesco Bank's headquarters is in Edinburgh. It employs approximately 3,700 staff based in the following cities in the UK: Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle.

  • Motor legal protection is underwritten by AmTrust Europe Ltd
  • Breakdown cover is underwritten by RAC Insurance Ltd
  • Keycover is underwritten by Ageas Insurance Ltd. Claims are handled by Keycare
  • Driver injury cover and upgraded courtesy car are underwritten by Tesco Underwriting Ltd

Tesco Bank provides two types of cover:

Tesco’s standard car insurance is available in two cover levels: fully comprehensive insurance, and third party, fire and theft insurance.

Tesco’s standard comprehensive car insurance comes with:

  • Courtesy car cover to keep you on the road while your car is being repaired or replaced.
  • Uninsured driver protection, ensuring that if you're hit by an uninsured driver, you won’t lose your no-claims bonus and your excess will be refunded.
  • Fire and theft cover, so you’ll be able to claim if your car is damaged in a fire or stolen.
  • Windscreen cover to cover the costs of repairing your windscreen.
  • Replacement child seat cover of up to £300,if yours is damaged in an accident.
  • Entertainment equipment cover to protect permanent fixtures like a sat nav or stereo.
  • European car insurance cover of up to 90 days if you’re a UK resident. There’s no need to pay extra.
  • Personal possessions cover of up to £200 if yours are lost or damaged because of an accident or theft.
  • Medical expenses cover of up to £100 per person if you or your passengers are involved in a car accident
  • Personal accident cover of up to £5,000 if you or your partner are seriously injured in an accident.
  • Emergency transport compensation of up to £150 to get you home after an accident. 

Tesco bank black box insurance gives you comprehensive cover, as well as:

  • Three mileage options, giving you a choice of 6,000, 8,000 or 10,000 miles, with the option to top up if you need it.
  • Accident alert function that can sense any strong impact on your car and contact the emergency services on your behalf.
  • Theft tracking that can help assist the police in finding your car if it’s stolen. 
  • Courtesy car cover to keep you on the road while your car is being repaired or replaced.
  • Windscreen cover to replace a broken or chipped windscreen.
  • Motor legal protection of up to £100,000 for legal costs and expenses if you need to claim compensation for injury.

Tesco Bank car insurance optional extras

Tesco Bank offers a range of policy add-ons, allowing you to customise your cover and ensure it does exactly what you need it to.

For an extra fee, you can add the following to your standard car insurance policy:

  • RAC breakdown cover, with 4 levels of cover to choose from.
  • Upgraded courtesy car cover ensuring you get a car similar in size to your usual car, available to you for up to 28 days while yours is being fixed.
  • Driver injury cover,that gives you a lump sum payment, up to a maximum specified limit, to help support your recovery if you're seriously injured on the road.
  • Key cover giving you up to £1,500 to replace your keys and locks if your keys are stolen or lost.
  • Motor legal protection of up to £100,000 for legal costs and expenses if you have to claim compensation for personal injury.

Breakdown cover and key cover can also be added to black box insurance policies.
