The Spanish island of Majorca is proving to be a popular destination for Britons eager to catch the sun in winter, according to a survey.
More holidaymakers rented a vehicle for breaks in Palma de Majorca than anywhere else during the 2010/11 winter season, said comparison site Carhiremarket.com, adding that a quarter of people look to Spain when opting for a winter fly-drive.
Coming up behind Majorca in the popularity stakes were Malaga and Alicante, according to the figures. Many travellers headed to the US, with Orlando appearing among the top 10 destinations.
The figures for last December and this January suggest that many people beating the big freeze with some winter sun would have been taking out travel insurance for Majorca trips.
Anel Brun, product manager for carhiremarket.com, said: "As the Met Office warned late last year that December was almost certainly the coldest since records began, many Brits took to the skies and flew off to sunnier climes."
