Who is RAC travel insurance?

RAC has 12.7 million members, offering a range of insurance products alongside its core breakdown assistance proposition. They include travel insurance, home insurance and car insurance.

Founded in 1897 as the Automobile Club of Great Britain, RAC has grown rapidly over the years. Its breakdown vans have long since become a constant feature of British roads.

Headquartered in Walsall, West Midlands, RAC currently has about 4,000 staff. RAC is a private company that's jointly owned by investment firms CVC Capital Partners and GIC Private Limited.

The RAC group operates through three subsidiaries: RAC Motoring Services, RAC Financial Services and RAC Insurance. These days, RAC has a highly sophisticated travel insurance offering in its own right.

There are three levels of cover to choose from and a range of optional extras.

RAC Travel Insurance is administered by Hood Travel and underwritten by German insurer Great Lakes Insurance.

RAC travel insurance cover levels

RAC offers annual, single trip and family travel insurance with three levels of cover:

Orange Cover is RAC’s basic travel insurance product.

Silver Cover is RAC’s mid-range travel insurance.

Black Cover is the highest level of travel insurance cover offered by RAC.

What's included with RAC travel insurance

RAC single trip, annual and family travel insurance policies include:

Cancellation cover if you need to cancel your trip. This insures you up to your benefit limit for prepaid transport, accommodation, and additional travel expenses.

RAC’s Black Cover offers £7,500 of cancellation cover. You'd get £5,000 with Silver Cover and £3000 with Orange Cover.

The hospital benefit cover limit is £1,500 with Silver Cover and £500 if you choose Orange Cover.

Covid-19 cover as standard. RAC travel insurance covers you if:

  • You have to cancel your trip due to a COVID-19 diagnosis within 14 days of departure

Personal Accident cover is designed to provide a lump sum in cases of permanent disability, loss of limbs/sight or death.

Travel delay and missed departure provides cover for travel delays, missed departures and travel disruption. This includes delays resulting in you departing at least 12 hours after your original scheduled departure time.

It also covers abandonment of your trip following a 12-hour delay at your first international departure point in the UK.

You can also make a claim if public transport services fail to get you to your departure point due to a strike, industrial action, adverse weather conditions, mechanical failure or direct involvement in an accident.
