What is an electric motorbike?

There are 2 types of electric motorbikes:

1. Electric motorbikes

Electric motorbikes run on electricity rather than petrol. Instead of filling up at a pump, you charge the bike’s battery. Like electric cars, they have a maximum driving range, which is the number of miles you can travel before the battery runs low. Once it needs power again, you can recharge it at home, overnight, or top it up at a public charging point while you’re out.

2. Hybrid motorbikes

Hybrid motorbikes use a mix of a petrol engine and an electric motor. The battery can recharge itself while you ride, and some models may also be able to charge via a plug in. This lets you use electric power for shorter, low speed trips such as riding around town. When the battery runs low, the bike switches back to petrol, and the battery then recharges again as you ride or when it is plugged in.

Do I need electric motorbike insurance?

Yes, it’s a legal requirement to be insured on a public road on an electric motorbike. Without motorbike insurance you run the risk of a fine and points on your licence. You could also lose out financially if you damage your bike or other people's property or vehicles. Even on a private drive or off the road, your motorbike could be stolen, vandalised or damaged.

In fact, your electric motorbike's higher price tag could make it more of a target for thieves compared to a regular petrol motorbike.

You're more likely to be hurt riding a motorbike than you are driving a car, so personal injury cover could be a good option. This may be available as an add-on to your electric motorbike insurance. Not having this cover could land you in financial difficulty if you end up having to be off work for recovery.

In addition to insurance, you also need to tax your motorbike, have a valid motorbike license and an MOT.

This includes everything covered by third party insurance, plus protection if your motorbike is stolen or damaged by fire.

Tips to get cheaper electric motorbike insurance

  • Pay annually if you can. Paying upfront is often cheaper than monthly instalments, which may include interest.
  • Build your no claims bonus. Each claim free year can earn you a discount on your premium.
  • Improve security and storage. Keeping your bike in a locked garage and using approved locks or alarms can reduce theft risk.
  • Give an accurate mileage estimate. Higher mileage can mean more time on the road, which insurers may see as a greater risk.
  • Choose a higher excess. Agreeing to pay more towards a claim can lower your premium, but make sure it’s affordable.
  • Consider advanced driving qualifications. Extra training can improve your skills and may help reduce insurance costs.

FAQs

Do I need insurance for an electric moped?

Yes, electric mopeds are treated the same as petrol mopeds and other electric motorbikes under UK law.

To ride one on public roads, you’ll need to make sure it is taxed and insured. You must also have completed the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) or hold the correct licence for the vehicle.

Are there any hybrid motorcycles?

Yes, but the hybrid motorcycle market is still in its early stages. Hybrid motorbikes and scooters use a combination of petrol and electric power, for example running on battery power for short urban trips before switching to petrol at higher speeds.

In 2024, Kawasaki launched the Ninja 7 Hybrid, which it described as the first “strong hybrid” motorcycle. This means it can run on either petrol or battery power independently, similar to how hybrid cars operate.
