Who is Rias home insurance?

Rias was founded in 1992 as the Retirement Insurance Advisory Service and is part of Ageas UK, an arm of the Belgium multinational. Ageas was formally branded Fortis Holdings, until 2010

The company’s based in Bournemouth, Dorset, where it employs over 900 people, including its call centre staff. In addition to home insurance, the provider offers car, breakdown and travel insurance.

RIAS promises flexible, affordable cover, providing dedicated helplines that are available to call around the clock. It’s home buildings and contents cover achieved a five-star rating by independent financial analyst Defaqto for product quality. Rias also gets an ‘excellent’ rating from customers who made their views known via review site Trustpilot.

Rias offers the following home insurance policy options, to suit homeowners and renters:

  • Buildings and contents cover – protects damage or losses arising from incidents that affect both the structure and permanent fixtures and fittings (i.e. the buildings). It also covers portable belongings (i.e. the contents), which can include items stored in sheds and garages
  • Buildings cover only
  • Contents cover only

Here’s a breakdown of the main benefits of the three types of cover Rias offers:

Rias buildings and contents insurance

  • Damage to the buildings or contents: You’re covered if there’s structural damage to your home, or losses incurred to your personal possessions and property caused by unpredicted events. These include fire, malicious damage, impact (for example by a vehicle), storm, flood, subsidence
  • Rent and alternative accommodation costs: If an event means your home can't be inhabited, you’re entitled to lodge a claim. High-risk item claims are limited to the amount shown under the maximum claims limit of up to £100,000 under buildings and/or up to 20% of the maximum contents claim limit
  • Replacement locks and keys: Should you lose or have your house keys stolen or damaged, you can claim up to £1,000 for replacement locks and keys
  • Public liability: you’re covered to the tune of £2 million should someone seek damages as a result of injury or accident, loss or damage caused by or on your property (e.g. a tiler falling from your roof or a house guest slipping on a wet kitchen floor)

Rias home buildings insurance

  • Structural damage: if your home is significantly damaged or destroyed you can claim up to £1 million towards repairs or a replacement
  • Trace and find: you’re entitled to put forward a claim of up to £5,000 to help cover the cost of discovering the source of water or oil leakage
  • Accidental damage: this policy will cover accidental damage to fixed glass, sanitary fixtures and solar panels. It’ll also provide for accidental damage to the fabric of cables, underground pipes and drains that service your home, for which you are responsible

Rias home contents insurance

  • Personal possessions: you’re entitled to claim up to £50,000 for loss of or damage to your personal items
  • High risk items: Rias sets a limit on the amount it’ll pay out for any one valuable item, which could include jewellery, clocks, watches, art or photographic equipment. The amount that’ll be paid depends on the number of bedrooms in your home and the contents sum insured you’ve selected. This will be explained in detail on your policy schedule or statement of fact
  • Electronic equipment: you’re covered for accidental damage to television sets, video recording, computer and audio equipment. Likewise, accidental damage to fixed glass in furniture and mirrors
  • Contents of outbuildings: you have up to £5,000 of protection against loss or damage to items stored in outbuildings such as sheds and garages
  • Garden items: anything from pond fountains to garden gnomes is covered to a limit of £2,000
  • Freezer spoilage: should the power fail, the policy will pay up to £1,000 to replace frozen food
  • Money: you're covered if a burglar or other miscreant steals money from your home or uses any of your debit or credit cards. In this case, Rias will recompense to up to £500, if this money is not retrievable from your card provider
  • Documents: should you lose valuable documents, such as passports or deeds, the insurer will put forward up to £2,500 to help you regain the lost items

Rias home insurance optional extras

Rias also offers a number of additional benefits that can be bolted on to your policy for a small fee. Here’s a summary of them and their key advantages:

  • Accidental damage extension - this option covers unintentional one-off incidents that result in accidental damage your property, such as putting your foot through the loft ceiling or spilling and staining red wine on a carpet
  • Unspecified personal belongings away from home cover – this benefit provides protection against loss of or damage to your or your family’s personal belongings, money and credit cards in the European area. Cover is also provided anywhere else in the world for up to 60 days in any period of insurance
  • Specified personal belongings away from home cover – as above, this solution gives you cover against loss of or damage to particular personal belongings, specified money and credit cards in the European area. Cover is also provided anywhere else in the world for up to 60 days in any period of insurance
  • Bicycle extension – this option covers accidental loss or damage to your or your family’s pedal cycles in the United Kingdom and the Isle of Man
