Yousif Khaleel

Mortgage Expert

“One piece of advice I’d give to anyone looking to buy a home is to be patient and flexible. Property searches can take longer than expected, and sometimes, your dream home might not tick every box on your list—but it’s about finding the right balance between affordability, location, and long-term value.

“Finally, I’d encourage buyers to get a mortgage agreement in principle (AIP) early on. This not only gives you a clear idea of your budget but also puts you in a stronger position when making offers, especially in competitive markets.”

Yousif’s home buying journey

Buying his first home was an exciting yet eye-opening experience. As a mortgage broker, Yousif had the advantage of understanding lender criteria and the mortgage process, but even with his in-depth knowledge, he quickly realised that there’s a lot more to home buying than just securing a mortgage.

One of the biggest lessons he learned was the importance of preparing early—both financially and mentally. For example, he made sure his credit score was in good shape, reduced unnecessary spending to boost affordability, and saved not just for the deposit, but also for additional costs like solicitor fees, survey fees, and moving expenses.

Another key takeaway was how crucial it is to work with the right professionals. Having an experienced solicitor and a responsive mortgage broker (even though he could have arranged it himself!) made the process smoother and less stressful.
