Who is Royal London?

Royal London is the largest mutual life, pensions and investment company in the UK. It says excellent customer service combined with its mutual status helps deliver more for customers and builds trust. Royal London was founded as a friendly society in 1861 and converted to become a mutual in 1908.

Continuing to take pride in its mutual status, Royal London claims this helps it consistently expand and improve its products as it stays in regular contact with members.

Because it doesn’t have shareholders to reward, Royal London believes it can give members better value and deliver higher levels of customer satisfaction.

Royal London offers life insurance, critical illness, income protection and business insurance as well as pensions, investment and equity release products.

In terms of life insurance, Royal London provides a range of cover types, including whole of life, over 50 life insurance, level term cover, decreasing term cover and diabetes life cover.

Royal London is still headquartered in London, where it began its life almost 170 years ago, but also has offices at other locations across the UK. Today, Royal London has almost 9 million policies in force and counts a workforce of over 4,000 employees.

What types of insurance does Royal London cover?

There are various types of cover to choose from with Royal London:

  • Level life cover
  • Decreasing life cover

Level life cover means the payout is fixed and will be the same were you to die in the early years of the policy or towards the end. Your payments stay the same throughout the term of the life insurance plan.

Decreasing life cover, on the other hand, reduces each month over the duration of your policy. This is a popular choice for people with a capital and repayments mortgage as the amount owed on the mortgage also falls over time.

What benefits does Royal London life insurance include?

You can buy Royal London’s life insurance product online without a doctor’s report or medical, and with just a few health questions – you’ll know instantly whether you can be insured or not. Along with providing a payout on your death, Royal London’s life insurance cover includes terminal illness benefit at no extra cost.

  • Fixed amount of cover
  • Critical illness cover
  • Terminal illness cover
  • 60-day grace period
  • Payment holiday

Fixed amount of cover means your policy could be more affordable and could easily cover an interest only mortgage, for example.

Critical illness cover is an option you can choose to add to your policy. You’ll receive a lump sum payment if you’re diagnosed with one of the critical illnesses that Royal London defines. If you choose to purchase Royal London’s critical illness cover, you’ll automatically get children’s benefit – giving them cover for the critical illnesses that fall inside Royal London’s definitions until they are 18 or 21 if in full-time education.

The standard terminal illness cover that’s included with Royal London’s life insurance pays out if you're diagnosed with a terminal illness and your life expectancy is less than a year.

A 60-day grace period is allowed with Royal London if you miss a monthly payment – it will only cancel your policy on the 61st day of your payment being overdue if you still haven’t paid the outstanding amount.

A payment holiday of up to 6 months is available at any time after the first year of the policy term. You’re allowed to take two payment holidays in total, at least one year apart.

Can I cancel my Royal London life insurance policy?

You can cancel your Royal London life insurance policy at any time. You should always think carefully before deciding to cancel a life insurance policy as it means you and your family will lose the protection the cover offers. Just give Royal London a call or write to them to let them know.

If you cancel within the first 30 days of taking out your policy, it will refund any payments you’ve already paid. When you cancel after the first 30 days, you stop paying your monthly payments and your cover will end but you won’t be entitled to any refund on premiums you’ve already paid.
