  • Over half (51%) of British drivers say a good passenger makes a great road trip.

  • One in six (17%) drivers say James Corden is their dream road-trip companion.

  • Kim Kardashian voted the nation’s nightmare passenger by over a third (36%) of drivers.

  • Jeremy Clarkson voted least popular of all former Top Gear presenters (35%), while almost a third (32%) of drivers named Boris Johnson as their nightmare car companion.

What makes a good road trip? Stunning scenery, good snacks and a sense of adventure – these can all certainly add to the joys of motoring. However, according to new research by, over half (51%) of British drivers say a good in-car companion makes all the difference to a driving adventure.

When it comes to picking the ultimate travel buddy, findings from the motoring experts reveal James Corden has been voted as the nation’s most popular passenger. Almost one in six (17%) drivers say the former Gavin and Stacey star turned chat-show host would be their dream companion for a drive.

Since taking America by storm as the new host of CBS’s The Late Late Show in March 2015, Corden has become arguably the most well-known driver in the world, with a staggering 1.5 billion views on YouTube.

During this time he has taken some of the most famous faces in the world for a spin, including First Lady Michelle Obama. The English actor has also famously been trying, unsuccessfully to date, to persuade Kanye West into his passenger seat. However, should he convince the rap superstar to hop aboard, he may want to encourage him to the leave his wife at home. This is because Kim Kardashian has the unenviable position of being voted the nation’s nightmare road trip companion by over a third of drivers (36%).

Meanwhile, good conversation can really help the time fly on a long drive. This is perhaps why comedian, actor and presenter Stephen Fry, known for his intelligence and oratory skills, was the second most popular passenger – receiving 13% of the vote. A good singalong is also an essential part of any great road trip. And, according to just under one in 10 (9%) drivers, this makes the multi-platinum album selling songstress Adele the ideal passenger.

Looking further down the list, serial road-tripper and car enthusiast Jeremy Clarkson has split the opinions of the nations’ drivers. In fact you may call him Marmite, as while one in 10 (11%) drivers say he would be their preferred celebrity passenger, over a third (35%) say he would be their nightmare road trip companion. This puts him in the odd position of being both the most and least popular of the former trio of Top Gear presenters, behind James May (8% said he was their dream passenger) and Richard Hammond (7%).

Boris Johnson, in the limelight over recent months, is also not a particularly popular person to be shut in a car with – almost a third (32%) said he would be their nightmare companion. Meanwhile, Ricky Gervais, perhaps being unfairly confused with his on-screen character David Brent, who’s set to star in his own road-trip film this month, was also not a particularly popular choice (17% of drivers said he’d be their nightmare passenger).

The top five dream and nightmare road-trip companions

1) James Corden (17%)  /  Kim Kardashian (36%)
2) Stephen Fry (13%)  /  Jeremy Clarkson (35%)
3) Jennifer Anniston (11%)  /  Boris Johnson (32%)
4) Jeremy Clarkson (11%)  /  Ricky Gervais (17%)
5) Adele (9%)  /  Cheryl Cole (17%)

Voted the nation’s most popular passenger,  James Corden has recently jumped into the driving seat to steer the way forward in’s latest TV ad, which aired on 3 August. The new campaign sees the British actor enjoying a miraculous run of luck, with every set of traffic lights that he encounters on his journey around London turning green. Through this appreciation of the uncelebrated wins of driving, is setting its stall out to be the ultimate destination for every driver looking for a win on all aspects of buying, selling and running a car.

Amanda Stretton, motoring editor at, says: “In a twist on the traditional ‘ultimate dinner party guest list’, it’s been great fun seeing who the nation’s drivers would like to share their vehicles with. And while the average motorist may never get to drive a car with the likes of James Corden or Kim Kardashian in the passenger seat, creating a list of dream driving companions could well make a great game on the next long drive.”
