Shopping around 28 days before renewal could save drivers £541, on average.

That’s according to new data released by Confused.com car insurance, which reveals 5 ways drivers could make small changes to their car insurance policy, and save hundreds.

While it’s important that motorists are accurate and honest when it comes to their car insurance policy, small things like protecting their no claims discount, or providing their licence card details could result in significant savings.

The first consideration for motorists is to shop around early, which data shows could result in savings of more than £500. According to Confused.com, drivers who shopped around 28 days before their renewal was due were quoted £511, on average. In comparison, those who quoted on the day of their renewal paid £1,052, on average. According to the data, prices were generally cheaper for those shopping between 3-4 weeks ahead of their renewal, with those leaving it last minute paying upwards of £900, on average.

5 changes drivers can make to save on their car insurance

Change Saving
Shop around 28 days before renewal
£542
Add spouse to policy
£499
Protect no-claims bonus
Up to £75
Add licence number details
£90
Declare the number of vehicles in the household
£48

Another way motorists can save a significant amount of money on their car insurance is to share the driving load and add another driver to their policy. Those who are named as the sole driver on their policy paid £917, on average. In comparison, those with an additional named driver paid £650, on average - a significant £267 difference. And adding a spouse, in particular, can result in even greater savings. That’s because those who named their spouse specifically paid £418, meaning they’re paying £499 less than the average sole driver.

Although, it’s important that drivers are being honest and only declare another driver if they’re likely to use the car. However, data does prove that if a family member or partner is using the car, adding a named driver rather than relying on third-party cover could be more cost-effective.

While protecting no claims discounts can come with an additional fee, drivers can still save money in doing so. Insurers typically offer this after drivers have built up a number of years of no-claims experience, at which point it becomes beneficial to protect. This means if they do make a claim, drivers may not lose their full no-claims history, depending on how many years they have. According to Confused.com’s data, the savings available to drivers protecting their NCB could hit up to £75, on average, once they hit 10 years of having no claims.

During their car insurance quote, drivers may be asked to provide their licence number details, and according to Confused.com, drivers who opted to do this paid £90 less than those who didn’t, on average. By providing their licence number, drivers are giving insurers a more accurate understanding of their driving history and allowing them to verify their details. And as a result, this can lead to more accurate pricing, often at a saving.

Lastly, if there is more than 1 car in the house, drivers should declare this on their quote to save themselves a bit of cash. According to the data, those who stated they only have 1 car paid £780, on average. While those with an additional car paid £732, on average. So for those who think this small detail doesn’t matter - it does! And it could save a bit of money too. But again, drivers should always be honest with this detail and only declare it if it’s true.

Car insurance prices hit £726 at the end of 2025, according to the latest car insurance price index by Confused.com, powered by WTW. While this is an £111 (-13%) drop in the past 12 months, prices are still considerably higher than they have been in recent years. And with changes to other motoring costs, like VED taxes and rising fuel costs, drivers are being urged to save money where they can on their car insurance.

Matt Crole-Rees, motoring expert at Confused.com, comments,

“When it comes to buying car insurance, there are a lot of details that we might overlook which could in fact save us money. Things like protecting no claims or adding a licence number can result in significant savings. Even adding a named driver rather than relying on third-party cover could save you hundreds.

“But it’s important that you are always accurate and honest when it comes to your car insurance quote. Flexing a few details to save money could put you at risk of invalidating your policy. But when it comes to your renewal, looking at if these small changes apply to you could help to save money.

“But there are also other ways you can save on your car insurance. The biggest saving comes from shopping around early - saving hundreds of pounds compared to leaving it until the last minute. But things like enhancing your car’s security or checking your mileage is accurate can also save you money when it comes to your renewal. We’ve provided 16 ways you can save money on your car insurance. While these may not all apply to you, even a few changes could help to save at a time when the cost of motoring is increasing.”
