If you like the sound of ‘greener’ car cover, cutting edge tech and no admin fees then Marshmallow may be for you. Marshmallow says they’re about fairness, speed and diversity. With strong City of London investor backing, it says it prices quotes fairly, particularly for those from overseas clients, to avoid over-charging.

Marshmallow’s business focus has now shifted to all UK nationals, particularly younger drivers and those with an inconsistent driving history. And it’s growing fast. Marshmallow handles claims via an online account or app, where you can access the 24/7 claims telephone line.

There’s no third party, fire and theft cover, just comprehensive cover. This model isn’t for everyone but there’s a 24/7 claim line and a direct phone contact for windscreen and legal claims.

Who is Marshmallow?

Marshmallow’s roots go back to 2018. This young, software-based company was part-founded by two identical twins aiming to be a force for good. In 2020 Marshmallow started the year with 13,000 clients and ended it with 50,000. By this time the company was also valued at more than £230 million – so it’s no bedroom-based fly-by-night.

This insurance company's youth means no reliance on age-old legacy systems. The two co-founding siblings, Oliver and Alexander Kent-Braham, say bespoke algorithms and other formulae price overseas driver policies.

What does this mean? When pricing a quote the UK insurance industry relies on tried-and-tested driver UK records and history. Instead, Marshmallow pulls together international data, not just national info, for a fuller and fairer picture. This is especially relevant for overseas and migrant drivers.

Oh, and if you ever need to amend your policy, there’s no charge for online tweaks. All Marshmallow policies are handled by an app or via the web. There’s no general customer care telephone number.

Looking ahead, Marshmallow hopes to expand into other countries and other insurance areas. While the insurance market is enormous, nimble fintech entrants are shaking things up fast. Marshmallow says their key differentiator is cost and inclusivity.

Marshmallow says its staff headcount now numbers 160 (August 2021), up 240% over 12 months. It offers a cycle-to-work scheme, private healthcare and there’s a strong emphasis on mental wellbeing. All its employees have the chance to buy shares in the company too. It’s registered in Old Street, East London.

Marshmallow policy details

Marshmallow don’t offer third party, fire and theft cover, just comprehensive cover. Their comprehensive policy includes:

  • Accident damage cover, which also covers vandalism. So if there’s neighbourhood trouble and your car’s singled out, you’re got protection.
  • Fire and theft for protection against fire, lightening and explosions.
  • European travel cover for up to 90 days travel automatically bundled in.
  • A Courtesy car, but like most other insurers this promise pivots on availability, should your car be off the road. It isn’t guaranteed. This courtesy car must be from Marshmallow’s approved list too, which is normal industry practice.
  • Windscreen damage, meaning you’re covered for crack repairs and full replacements, but you’ll need to pay an excess.
  • Personal injury covers is offered, up to £5,000. Marshmallow says it will cover any injury costs to another driver and their passengers if an accident’s your fault.

Breakdown cover is not included. However, it’s possible to add breakdown cover to your quote. Or buy it independently, which may be cheaper.

Marshmallow offers a selection of car insurance policies and types. Not all policies and types are available through our site, so the exact levels of cover and benefits may vary. Before buying car insurance, we recommend you check the cover and benefits included.
