Driving to Europe this summer?
Before you set off, there are a few things that you should check that could save you a lot of stress.
First, make sure you have all the essentials: you are going to need your passport, driving licence, proof of insurance, and vehicle registration document.
Speaking of insurance, don't assume you're covered just because you have a UK policy.
Most insurers will provide some level of cover for driving in Europe, but the type of cover can vary. In some cases, you might only have third-party protection, even if you have a fully comprehensive policy in the UK.
And if you're hiring a car or travelling further abroad, you might need additional documents like an International Driving Permit.
One thing many drivers forget - The driving kit.
Depending on where you're going, you could be legally required to carry several items. This could be a warning triangle, a high-vis jacket, a spare bulb, or a first aid kit.
Finally, think about breakdown cover.
Most standard UK policies don't automatically include European breakdown assistance, so it's worth checking before you leave. Breaking down over a hundred miles away from home is probably not how you want your holiday to start.
So before you pack the suitcases and hit the road, take five minutes to check your documents, insurance, and driving kit.
