Prices have fallen by £38 in the past 12 months, making car insurance 5% cheaper than this time last year. The latest figure of £719 is slightly (£8) more expensive than just 3 months ago, marking the first time prices have increased since the end of 2023.

In general, the older and more experienced a driver you are, the cheaper your insurance. This means young drivers are usually hit the hardest with policies sometimes costing thousands of pounds.

For drivers aged 17 to 20, car insurance is among the most expensive, with the latest average policy costing about £1,813***.

It’s frustrating, but there’s a reason - insurers see new drivers as higher risk. Less experience means more chance of something going wrong. But thankfully, there are ways to bring these costs down.

Make sure your mileage is accurate

Overestimate, and you pay more than you should. Underestimate, and you risk invalidating your policy. The UK avaerage is around 7,100 miles each year, according to the Department of Transport.

Add a named driver

Check your job title is correct

Park securely

A driveway or garage can be cheaper compared to parking on the road . If you don’t have a driveway there are other ways you can make your car more secure.

Pay annually if you can

Paying in one go is usually cheaper than paying monthly, as insurers charge interest for spreading the cost. If you can afford it, pay upfront and pocket the savings!

There are 3 main levels of cover to choose from. It's a legal requirement to have at least third party cover in place. Whichever you choose, make sure to understand what's covered and any excess you might have to pay if you need to make a claim.

Comprehensive

Get the highest level of protection - covering you, your car, other people, and their property. Surprisingly, it’s often the cheapest option too.

Third-party fire & theft

Covers damage you cause to others, plus theft and fire damage to your car. A solid middle ground for essential protection without extras.

Third-party only

The bare minimum required by law. Covers damage to others and their property but not your car. Even though this option offers the lowest level of protection, it isn’t necessarily the cheapest.
