Is it safe to get a taxi abroad?

Mostly, yes - but it depends on where you go. In places like the US, Japan, and most of Western Europe, taxis are usually safe and simple to use. Elsewhere, unlicensed cars and overcharging are more common. So, know what to look for.

Always use official taxi ranks, hotel-booked cars, or licensed ride-hailing apps. Avoid drivers who approach you, especially at airports and tourist spots. If you hail a taxi, check for a rooftop light, a visible driver ID, and a fare card inside.

Our research* shows 46% of UK travellers worry about taxi drivers taking advantage, and 37% are concerned about unlicensed vehicles. It's also worth checking your travel insurance covers belongings and theft before you go, cover and limits vary by policy.

How do I avoid being overcharged for a taxi abroad?

It happens more often than you'd think. In fact, over half (55%) of UK travellers who use taxis abroad say they've felt ripped off. Maybe the driver took a long route, added surprise fees, or quoted a flat rate that felt too high from the start.

The best way to protect yourself? Always insist on the meter if one's available. In countries where meters aren't standard – like Morocco or parts of Thailand – agree on a price before you hop in. Language barrier? Show your destination on your phone and ask the driver to show you their price.

At airports, skip the drivers inside the terminal. Head straight for the official taxi rank. Many airports have fixed-rate zones with fares posted on an official board - if someone quotes more, you can say no. Check the expected cost for your destination's airport transfer above before you go.

Should I use Uber or a local taxi abroad?

Ride-hailing apps like Uber show you the price upfront, track your journey, and link directly to your driver's ID. That makes them a safer, more transparent choice than hailing a cab on the street, most of the time.

But Uber and Bolt aren't everywhere. Some parts of Spain limit ride-hailing apps, for example. Heading to Southeast Asia? Grab your go-to. In Japan, GO is the local favourite. And across the Middle East and North Africa, Careem is widely available. Always check which apps work before you fly - don't just assume your usual will.

No app available? Ask your hotel to book a taxi. It's often the safest bet, and around 35% of UK travellers abroad do exactly that. Especially for airport pickups, booking ahead beats winging it and saves you a load of stress.

How much does a taxi typically cost abroad?

It's a mixed bag! UK travellers usually spend around £69 on taxis during a one-week trip abroad. Western Europe often sees short metered journeys in the £6–15 range, while Southeast Asia can be much cheaper – Bangkok taxis can start well under £2 for a short trip. Airport transfers usually cost more, and in some cities (like Paris, New York, and Rome) fixed rates apply, traffic or not.

Which countries have the best taxi services?

The USA came out on top (15%), followed by Spain (7%) and the UAE and Italy (both 4%). These places typically have regulated metered taxis, good app coverage, and clear airport pricing. On the flip side, India, Egypt, and Turkey were most often rated as the trickiest destinations for taxis.

What should I do if I feel unsafe in a taxi abroad?

Always trust your gut. If something feels off, ask to be dropped in a busy public area and leave calmly. Share your live location with someone before you travel, note the vehicle registration when you get in, and if you're using a ride-hailing app, remember your journey is already being tracked automatically.
