What do we mean by an imported car?

Imported cars can mean a couple of different things:

  • Parallel imports - This covers right-hand drive cars brought in from other European nations that comply with European standards. As they already meet many of the EU standards, they are generally easy to insure in the UK

  • Grey imports - These are cars brought into the UK that haven't been EU-approved and may not meet European standards. Japan and America are both popular sources due to the cost difference and increased performance many of their cars offer over their European counterparts

If you've bought or are thinking about buying a grey import, you must make sure it has all the necessary environmental and safety certificates before you can keep or drive it on public roads. See the Gov.uk website for more information.

What should I know about insuring an imported car?

There are plenty of reasons why you might want to choose a car brought in from outside of the UK, including...

  • They can be cheaper than their UK counterparts
  • You can get hold of models not sold in the UK
  • Performance of cars may be better than those models available in the UK

Despite all these benefits, it's worth knowing that getting grey import car insurance can actually be harder than getting the car to the UK in the first place. This can be for a number of reasons including...

  • As performance may be higher, insurers class this as a higher risk of being involved in an accident
  • Grey import cars may not meet EU standards for safety or emissions
  • Parts can be harder to come by and therefore estimating repair costs can be difficult
  • Repairs may need to be carried out by specialists

Fear not though, even though it can be tough to get an insurance quote, there are specialist insurers in the industry that can provide quotes. Click on 'Get a quote' at the top of the page to get looking.

Make getting a quote at Confused.com even easier

Although it only takes a matter of minutes to submit a quote, there are a couple of things you can do to speed up the process:

If you've used the site before, you can log into your account, retrieve or update previous quotes or run a brand new quote. To access your quote, click on the 'sign in' button at the top right of the page.

If you're running a brand new quote save time by having these details ready:

  • Details of the car you want to insure - The registration number, make and model, how much it's worth, the import type etc.
  • Your details - Your name, address, occupation, licence type and how long you've held it, any driving claims or convictions etc.
  • Additional drivers - Details of any additional drivers you'd like to add to the policy
  • Policy details - When you'd like the policy to start, the level of cover you're looking for, where the car is stored at night etc.

If you need more information before getting a quote, take a look at our car insurance guides where there are helpful guides on understanding different policy types, how insurance groups affect your premium, how car insurance is calculated and more.
