Demand vs supply

Whether it’s a supercar with only a handful of models produced or a vintage classic that has gradually faded away, some cars are rarer than others.

In many cases, it’s the rarity of these vehicles that makes them such a hot commodity for drivers, with thousands still wanting to buy them.

In fact, in some cases, there are thousands of people looking to buy vehicles online, of which there are just 1 or 2 models in the whole country.

If you’re finally buying your dream car, be sure to compare car insurance quotes to save and get the best deal.

Looking at the number of annual Google searches compared to the number of cars currently registered in the UK, here are the country’s most in-demand cars.

The UK’s most sought-after cars

Infographic showing UKs top 3 most sought after cars

1. Lexus LFA
Annual search volume: 42,920
Registered vehicles: 3
Searches per registered vehicle: 14,307

The car where interest outstrips supply the most is the Lexus LFA, with 14,307 searches for every 1 in the UK.

The LFA was a sports car that ceased production in 2012, with just 500 being produced. Despite the fact that production ceased a decade ago, it’s reported that 1 of those 500 still remains unsold. Meanwhile, 5 of the cars have been sold in just the last couple of years.

One of these was auctioned at Sotheby’s for $720,000 (around £595,000) so those in the market for one may have to start saving!

2. McLaren P1
Annual search volume: 14,210
Registered vehicles: 4
Searches per registered vehicle: 3,553

In second place is the McLaren P1, with over 14,000 drivers looking to buy the F1-inspired car, yet there are just 4 available in the UK.

Like the Lexus LFA, the McLaren P1 was produced in limited numbers, with under 450 being made before production stopped in 2015. Considered the successor to the McLaren F1, the P1 used Formula 1 technology and some of the higher performance variants can only be driven at a track.

When they were available to buy new, a P1 would set you back around $1.15 million (£950,000) and used models are even pricer.

3. Lamborghini Centenario
Annual search volume: 2,180
Registered vehicles: 1
Searches per registered vehicle: 2,180

Just 1 person in the UK currently owns a road-legal Lamborghini Centenario, yet over 2,000 a year are searching for how to buy one. They’re certainly a fortunate individual, as just 40 of these cars were made in the whole world, as part of the super-exclusive “Few Off” series.

Lamborghini loves to make these extremely rare models, with this particular example being created in honour of what would have been the 100th birthday of Ferruccio Lamborghini.

The Centenario was launched with a $1.92 million (£1.59 million) price tag, with all 40 being snapped up instantly.

The UK’s most sought-after affordable cars

As you can see, most of the most sought-after cars only have a handful of models in existence. Here’s a look at the most in-demand cars that you might actually be able to get your hands on. Each of these vehicles has at least 10,000 models currently registered in the UK.

Infographic showing the most sought after common cars

1. Ford Mustang
Annual search volume: 79,380
Registered vehicles: 10,851
Searches per registered vehicle: 7.32

In first place is the iconic Ford Mustang. The Mustang has a long and storied history, as one of Ford’s most enduring vehicles.

It launched in 1964 as one of the first American muscle cars and influenced car design for many years to come.

It’s undergone many changes over the years but remains one of the most iconic cars in the world, with just over 10,000 currently in the UK.

Currently, a Mustang retails for just over £50,000 in the UK for the GT Fastback variant.

2. Jaguar F-Type
Annual search volume: 78,620
Registered vehicles: 13,630
Searches per registered vehicle: 5.77

Second place goes to the Jaguar F-Pace, with 5.77 searches for each of the 13,360 models currently registered in the UK.

The spiritual successor to one of Jaguar’s most famous models, the E-Type, the F-Type is a 2-seater grand tourer, which recently underwent a facelift.

As a Jaguar, it’s an undoubtedly stylish car, with convertible options available too, but with a powerful engine to back it up. The latest version of the F-Type has a list price starting from £56,110.

3. BMW M4
Annual search volume: 58,800
Registered vehicles: 13,549
Searches per registered vehicle: 4.34

Completing the top 3 is the BMW M4, with 58,800 searches from those looking to buy, but just 13,549 registered in the UK.

The M4 is the high-performance version of the BMW 4 Series, developed by the brand’s motorsports division.

Setting it apart from the 4 Series are an upgraded engine, suspension, exhaust and brakes, as well as the use of carbon fibre to reduce the weight. The most affordable version of the M4 currently has an on-the-road price of £79,475.

Alex Kindred, car insurance expert at Confused.com, comments:

“The rarity of particular car models can often lead to significant customer demand. Customers are often keen to get their hands on unique product offerings to distinguish themselves from others. Whether you’re a true classic car enthusiast, or simply enjoy the finer things in life, the combination of car rarity and nostalgia has led to an incredibly competitive motor market.

“Cars such as the Lexus LFA see over 42,000 annual searches, yet there are only 3 available in the UK. Similarly, despite only 4 models of the McLaren P1 being available annual searches average over 14,000, arguably driving the desirability of the car even further.

“If you’re lucky enough to get your hands on one of these rare models, be sure to compare car insurance quotes first to make sure your unique model is protected with the best deal.”
