Choosing the right tyres

Winter tyres

Containing more natural rubber than usual, winter tyres are designed so they won’t become too hard when the temperature drops. These tyres reduce the risk of aquaplaning, and create a shorter stopping distance when braking.

All-season tyres

A combination of both winter and summer tyres, these tyres are more common in countries that have moderate weather throughout the year, like the UK.

Run-flat tyres

These tyres are designed to allow safe driving after a puncture for up to 50 miles – enough to get you home or to the nearest garage.

4x4 tyres

Pretty much what it says on the tin, these tyres are designed for 4x4s. They can then be broken down into three types: off-road, on-road and all-terrain tyres.

Caravan tyres

Caravan tyres are recommended to be replaced every five years. Even if the caravan’s been sitting in the same spot in that time, tyres can still wear away.

Van tyres

Reinforced to carry the weight of a van, these tyres can carry a bigger weight across longer journeys than a standard tyre. Markings on the side of the tyre – which can be extra load (XL) or reinforced (RF) – will let the driver know how much weight the wheels can handle.
