Lost passport - how to get emergency travel documents

Losing your passport while you’re abroad can be stressful, but there is a way to get home.

Every year, thousands of UK travellers need an emergency travel document after losing or having their passport stolen.

A UK emergency passport, also called an emergency travel document, is a specific document that lets you travel one leg of the journey, usually back to the UK.
To apply, you must first report your passport as lost or stolen. And then apply online through the GOV.UK website, pay the fee, provide contact details, travel plans, and any ID that you have.

Emergency travel documents are issued by British embassies and consulates worldwide. Processing usually takes a few days, but urgent cases can be issued within twenty-four hours.
These documents are not full passports. They are only valid for a limited journey, and not all countries accept them, so always check requirements.

You may be able to claim costs through your travel insurance. For more travel and insurance guidance, visit Confused.com.
