Thousands of motorbike owners do not know how to perform simple maintenance tasks, according to insurer Swinton.
The firm’s survey of 1,200 customers found that almost one in five didn’t know how to carry out the most basic checks on their bikes – a failing that could lead to more serious or expensive problems, as well as potential danger on the roads.
Anthony Aronin, head of Swinton Bike Insurance, said: “A few simple checks will give you a more enjoyable riding experience and most importantly give you piece of mind that everything on your bike is in good working order.
“Make sure you continually consult your manual, have a friend check over your work and don't make any changes if you are not 100 per cent sure what to do.”
Swinton offers the following advice to motorcyclists:
- Check the tyre pressure on a weekly basis – but only when they are cold
- Ensure the chain tension is correct while someone is mounting the bike, as the chain will tighten once the rider is on board
- Regularly check the battery and grease the battery terminals to avoid corrosion; check the acid level with great care
- Check the bike's coolant level, but only when the radiator is cold
- Change the bike's oil by warming the engine through and removing the filler cap.
