Chequing out: The phasing out of cheques

Pen resting on a cheque bookSo farewell, then, the humble cheque. After over three centuries of service, the UK Payments Council have announced that they're to be phased out by 2018.

This hasn't been met with universal approval. Some concern has been expressed by groups such as Help The Aged and Age Concern, who argue that a good deal of pensioners who haven't embraced the internet still rely on using cheques as their primary form of payment.
