Who is Devitt?

It all began in 1936 when Howson Foulger Devitt started an innovative scheme insuring motorcycles through motorcycle dealers. This meant that riders could buy their motorbike and ride it away, fully covered the same day.

Howson started his career in insurance at Lloyd’s in London, but insurance was in the blood of the Devitt family. In 1836, Devitt & Moore was set up as a shipping insurance broker – the company was jointly owned by Howson’s grandfather, Thomas Henry Devitt.

A lot has changed since Devitt Jr began insuring motorbikes in the 1930s, and the company has been bought and sold numerous times. They have been owned by household names including Churchill and The Royal Bank of Scotland but are now the largest privately-owned motorbike insurance specialist in the UK.

Devitt’s 130-strong team is based mainly at the company’s Romford office in East London and looks after the insurance interests of over 120,000 riders.

Devitt has for many years arranged the official BMW Motorrad Insurance scheme and has not been shy to come forward as a racing motorbike sponsor at various times.

The Crooks Suzuki bike ridden by the legendary Barry Sheene had the Devitt Insurance logo emblazoned on each side and more recently, Devitt enjoyed TT winning success as the sponsor of Ivan Lintin, three-time winner of the Lightweight TT. Since then, Devitt have also go on to establish a flat track racing team, with double champion Jack Bell leading the way.

Devitt motorbike insurance policy details

Devitt offers three levels of motorbike insurance:

Third-party only cover (TPO) is the minimum insurance requirement for motorcycles in the UK, and it provides the minimum level of cover. TPO policies only cover damage to vehicles and property belonging to other people. You and your motorbike won’t be covered in the event of any accident or incident where you are found to be at fault. In the event of an accident that isn’t your fault, you may be able to claim through the insurance of the other individual involved.

Third party, fire and theft also includes cover for your motorbike if it's stolen or damaged by fire in an addition to TPO cover.

Comprehensive insurance covers all of the above but also includes cover for you and your motorbike if you're involved in an accident, even if it was your fault.

Devitt motorbike insurance optional extras

When you take out motorbike insurance with Devitt, there are a number of optional extras that you can add on to your policy for an additional cost. These include:

  • Legal expenses cover which will provide you with up to £100,000 if you're involved in an accident that isn't your fault.
  • Four levels of RAC breakdown cover;- Roadside, Recovery, At Home and Onward travel, plus EU cover.
  • Personal accident cover will cover up to £15,000 in the event that you have an accident.
  • Helmet and leathers cover is provided even if you're not hurt in an accident.

If you choose the Devitt Enhanced or Devitt Evolution plan, some of these benefits may be included as standard.
