Calculate your life expectancy

The majority of Brits can expect to live until around the age of 80 - up to 15 years longer than the world average. Work out your life expectancy with our handy new calculator.

Life expectancy at birth in the UK currently stands at 78.2 years for men and 82.3 years for women.

This is according to the latest life expectancy data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS), which looks at the three-year period from 2008 to 2010.

This compares with a world average life expectancy of 65.7 years for men and 70.1 for women, based on the latest EU data for 2005-10.

Brits living longer

In the UK it seems we're not only living longer than the world average, but that we're living longer than ever before.

Between 1960 and 2010 the average life span has increased by around 10 years for a man and eight years for a woman.

This is due to large improvements in infant and childhood mortality in the first half of the twentieth century and more recently improvements in mortality rates at older ages, according to the ONS.

And improved healthcare also means the proportion of older people in the population is increasing.

Centenarians on the rise

The number of centenarians - people aged 100 or more - and even supercentenarians, those aged 110 or older, is on the rise.

The ONS report Mortality in England and Wales: Average Life states: "In 1980 the percentage of the population aged 85 and over was just over one per cent and by 2010 this had doubled.

"In addition the estimated number of centenarians in England and Wales has risen five-fold from 2,280 in 1980 to 11,610 in 2010."

Married people live longer

A new study suggests that married people live longer than their single counterparts.

Researchers from Duke University Medical Center in the US found that married people were 2.3 times more likely to survive middle age than those who had never married or settled down.

Lead researcher Dr Ilene Siegler said: "Having a partner during middle age is protective.

"Being single or losing a partner without replacement are the situations that increase mortality risk during middle age and decrease the probability that one will survive to be elderly."

The study suggests that the increased emotional support experienced by married people helps contribute towards a longer life.
