Commercial smart meters are similar to energy monitors in that they enable you to see how much electricity and gas your business is using and when – providing you with much more control in terms of improving your energy efficiency.

This allows you to streamline your energy usage by identifying times when you can do more to reduce consumption.

However, smart meters for business do even more in that they automatically provide your energy supplier with a detailed reading of your energy usage – helping to ensure your monthly energy bills are as accurate as possible and avoiding the chances of you being over or undercharged.

Technology is changing every aspect of our lives, and how we use and monitor our energy usage is no different. Smart meters have become increasingly popular in recent years because of the many different benefits they bring to businesses of all sizes – from microbusinesses set up in a person’s home, to large, multi-site businesses with complicated requirements and energy usage patterns.

Enabling greater control and much more accurate bills, smart meters are being seen as a great breakthrough by many. Confused.com can help you decide whether a smart meter is right for your business and make the entire process as straightforward as possible.

If you are thinking of installing a smart meter, it is only natural to want to know what benefits your business can see. Commercial smart meters are completely free to install – meaning you won’t suddenly find yourself faced with a new bill.

In addition to being able to better monitor and control your energy usage, your bills will be much more accurate – saving you both money and hassle. This means you will have a much better idea as to what your monthly bills will be, preventing any unwanted surprises.

Whilst the cost of smart meters will initially be passed on to you via your bills, this increase is likely to be small and short lived, with expected savings estimated to be around £100 per customer.

Whilst smart meter installation is free, in that you will not be charged a one-off fee when it first arrives, the cost of the meter and installation will be reflected in your monthly bill. Therefore, if you want to get a smart meter, you should be aware of this initial cost.

Whilst this may put some off, the cost of the meter is predicted to be repaid fairly quickly, with businesses expected to recoup the costs and begin saving on their energy bills within 1-2 years. Such benefits are making smart meters an increasingly popular choice for businesses of all sizes.

If you wish to learn more about smart meters and how quickly you can get one installed, simply contact your existing energy supplier and let them know of your interest.

If you have decided you want a smart meter installed for your business, the process is now very simple. Once you have requested a new smart meter be installed at your premises, an engineer will visit and install it. This should take no more than 1-hour per meter.

Smart meters are often installed in the same location as your old meters, so you are advised to make sure this area is free of clutter and ready for when the engineer arrives.

If you want to have a smart meter for both your gas and electricity supplies, you will need to have a separate smart meter installed for each.
