The overall picture

Biggest price drop since 2014 brings lowest car insurance costs in six years

Car insurance prices have dropped by £97 (16%) over the past 12 months – the steepest price decrease in more than seven years. That’s according to the latest Confused.com car insurance price index, powered by Willis Towers Watson. Drivers can now expect to pay £514 for their car insurance, which is the lowest price paid in six years.

Average prices by region

Premiums across UK regions decrease by as much as £164 in 12 months 

The cost of car insurance dropped the most in Inner London, with prices now £164 (17%) cheaper than 12 months ago. Drivers in the region now pay an average of £804 for car insurance, making it the most expensive area in the UK for car insurance.

Car insurance prices drop the most for younger drivers 

The cost of car insurance for 19-year-olds decreased by £182 (13%) in 12 months, to £1,255, on average. However, 18-year-olds pay the most for their car insurance, with the average price for this age now £1,379.  Meanwhile, prices are cheapest for 70-year-olds, who pay £301, in comparison, on average

Average prices by gender

Men pay more than women for car insurance

The average costs of car insurance for men and women both dropped, falling by £103 (16%) for men, and by £88 (16%) for women. Male drivers now pay £549, while female drivers pay £456, on average.
