Older motor caravans, light 4x4 pick-ups and similar vehicles could face extra charges on London's roads after January 3, 2012.

A daily charge of up to £200 could be levied on owners of such vehicles if they travel through the London Low Emission Zone (LEZ) after this date, under tighter regulations that are to come into force.

The new rules, which are linked to the Euro IV emissions standards, will also affect large vans, motorised horse boxes and vehicles used to carry large items.

Extra charges will be levied on vehicles that fail to comply with the criteria if they drive within the LEZ.

Alex Wright, managing director of Shoreham Vehicle Auctions, said: "Transport for London estimates 72,000 vans and minibuses will be affected by the new LEZ regulations."
