UK travellers warned over posture

Chiropractors have warned people travelling abroad over the bank holiday breaks to make sure they avoid the problems associated with long haul flights.

The British Chiropractic Association has revealed that concentrated periods of extensive travelling might be taking their toll on the nation's backs and creating bad posture among many.

Taking precautions while flying abroad could also save tourists from having to make a travel insurance claim if they endure adverse health complaints following the journey.

Research commissioned by the group found that 51 per cent  of the British population are currently experiencing back pain, while 68 per cent have endured the problem at some point in their lives.

There are worries that extended periods of travelling, such as during the bank holiday weekends, will see Britain gearing towards becoming a 'bent out of shape' nation.

When travelling on planes, trains or by car, mo36 per cent of people experience stiffness and, more worryingly, 30 per cent admit suffering from back pain.

Tips from the association include:

  • If you are flying, drink plenty of water and NOT alcohol during the flight as this will cause dehydration.
  • - If travelling by plane, train or car, avoid stiffness by doing shoulder shrugs where you hold the shrug for five seconds and repeat five times, and buttock clenches.
  • - If on a train or plane, try to stand up and move around every 20 to 40 minutes or take the opportunity to stretch.
