UK holidaymakers spend a lot less money than their French counterparts, according to new figures.

The average Brit abroad spends £898 while on their travels, while a typical French tourist will spend around £1,418, the figures from lastminute.com suggest.

Irish people will spend an average of £716 on their holidays while the Italians were revealed to be the most frugal on vacation, splashing out just £613.

The survey also found that people from Ireland spend a lot less time planning a holiday compared to the Spanish. People from Ireland spend an average of 11 days getting ready for a holiday while Spaniards spend about 86 days preparing for a break, according to the poll.

It was also revealed that British people spend an average of 45 days preparing for their holidays. Of these, 36 per cent plan well in advance of their holiday while 10 per cent wait until just before the departure date before getting themselves organised.

Lastminute.com UK and Ireland managing director Mark Maddock said: "It's interesting to see the difference in countries' holiday-booking lead times. The Irish are the most last-minute but seem to be among the lower spenders."
