Many holidaymakers do not fancy going far afield with 34 per cent never having ventured outside Europe, a survey has revealed.

The poll of British travellers said most of those taking a break near to home said they were put off going outside the continent because they enjoyed the familiarity of European countries.

And 22 per cent in the poll by travel agent www.sunshine.co.uk considered a European break cheaper while 13 per cent preferred short flying times.

However, 11 per cent revealed they had never holidayed in Europe, with 32 per cent of these claiming breaks outside Europe were cheaper and 24 per cent saying they were now used to particular longer-haul destinations.

With those taking trips further than Europe, 4 per cent only considered a holiday worthwhile if it involved a long-haul flight, and 7 per cent of the 1,100 polled were unsure whether they had actually been outside Europe for a break.

Sunshine.co.uk co-founder Chris Brown said people should not be afraid to look a little further afield for a holiday.
