As millions prepare to enjoy the soaring temperatures with trips away during the Easter holidays, motorists have been warned to make sure they have breakdown cover to ensure tempers do not hit boiling point should they experience car problems.

With breakdown vehicles stretched to the limit during the busy bank holiday getaway, GEM Motoring Assist said the best solution is to be prepared for the worst before you set off, as on-the-spot breakdown cover can be extremely expensive.

Once your breakdown cover is sorted, there are some other tips to follow to make sure you and your family stay cool as you make your way to your sunshine destination.

Before you set off, check your tyres, battery, oil level, screenwash, lights, fuel and mirrors. Watch for changes to the feel of your car and look out for strange noises or smells that may need investigating.

Always plan your journey and have clear directions before you head off, as there is no point promising the kids a day out at the beach if you end up nowhere near the coast.

And even though temperatures are rising, always have warm waterproof clothing in your car, and it is a good idea to keep a tow rope, first-aid kit, torch and spare bulbs in your boot.
