Spain has been voted as the safest holiday destination, with the country becoming increasingly popular among British travellers.

A poll by www.sunshine.co.uk asked people to rate places on a scale of one to 10, where one indicates 'extremely unsafe' and 10 means 'extremely safe.'

The survey of 2,916 holidaymakers showed Spain scored 9.8, emerging as the safest destination. France comes second in the list, followed by Cyprus, New Zealand and Denmark.

Meanwhile, Mexico tops the list of destinations where tourists feel the least safe at 1.8, suggesting the need to take out comprehensive travel insurance before making a trip to the country.

Other places voted as unsafe in the poll were South Africa, Bulgaria, Jamaica and Dubai.

Chris Brown, co-founder of sunshine.co.uk, said: "Britons obviously feel more at ease when holidaying in countries that are a little closer to home, such as in Europe, but people shouldn't fear certain places."
