More people look likely to take holidays in spring this year, rather than waiting until the summer, new research has suggested.

A study released by ING Direct indicates that budget considerations and the London Olympics will encourage more consumers to travel in the spring instead of leaving their trips abroad until later in the year.

Nearly one third of those polled by the firm said they intend to go on holiday this spring. In previous years, the figure has stood at just a fifth.

Richard Doe, chief executive at the firm, said the lower costs associated with spring holidays could save families money this year.

He added: "This is compounded by the fact we're set for an outstanding summer of sport, with one of the greatest sporting events in the world taking place on our doorstep."
