British holidaymakers are taking more breaks at off-peak times, with up to 25 per cent having been on such a holiday in the last three years, a survey found.

The poll also revealed that 28 per cent were willing to miss out on hot weather on these trips in order to save money.

The breakdown showed 43 per cent of the off-peak holidaymakers going at those times to save cash, 27 per cent to avoid the crowds, and 21 per cent wanting to escape the times of extreme heat.

Up to 25 per cent of the 2,058 adults surveyed by lastminute.com were prepared to compromise on the airline's quality, and 23 per cent would settle for fewer activities and amenities.

"There are always ways to get away without spending beyond our means," said Mark Maddock, the website's UK and Ireland managing director.
