More Britons are hiring cars on foreign holidays, mainly because they had more spending money for holiday add-ons this year, a survey said.

Travel agent sunshine.co.uk polled 1,199 UK adults of whom 38 per cent said they had rented a car this year, compared with 19 per cent of holidaymakers hiring last year.

Travellers said another reason for the increase was the ability to go to and from the airport by themselves.

The poll said 79 per cent of those using a car abroad this year or last felt it improved the break, although 6 per cent thought it "wasn't worthwhile", and up to 52 per cent would probably hire a car for an overseas trip in 2012.

Of those surveyed, each went on holiday abroad at least once in 2010 and once this year.
