Driving on unfamiliar roads is among the factors which are causing a number of people to experience stress while away on holiday, new research indicates.

According to survey results published by Continental Tyres, 51% of people tend to begin their holiday with an argument with their loved ones.

Getting lost while driving on roads they do not know is one major cause of arguments for travellers, along with disputes regarding directions.

Car-related problems are also responsible for 18% of people's holiday disasters, the study suggested.

Tim Bailey, a spokesperson for Continental Tyres, said that people's holiday expectations tend to be high.

He added: "What really creates tension is when something happens that better planning would have avoided."

After arriving at their holiday destination, the firm's research showed that people are unable to relax for two days and six hours on average.
