Heathrow Airport saw its busiest ever June as 6.1 million travellers passed through its gates.

BAA said the airport handled a record 6.1 million travellers during the month, up 6.3 per cent on June 2010.

In total, 9.9 million passengers passed through the company's six airports during the month, an overall increase of 4.4 per cent on the same month last year.

Brazil was among the destinations which saw an increase in visitors, with the US also proving popular.

Colin Matthews, BAA chief executive, said the figures indicated a busy summer ahead and that the company would be focusing on providing the best possible service.

Meanwhile former BAA-owned airport Gatwick also saw an increase in passengers numbers, up 5.2 per cent in June to 3.20 million.
