Flight services in the UK are starting to return to normal after the Icelandic ash cloud which had clogged the skies cleared up.

The all-clear, issued by air traffic control company Nats, came after dozens of flights in Scotland and Newcastle were cancelled due to high levels of ash in the atmosphere.

Officials warned, however, that the ash cloud was now moving towards Germany and some services to the country from the UK are under threat, with British Airways and easyJet already axing some flights.

Hamburg airport has been closed until Wednesday afternoon while Berlin's Schonefeld and Tegel airports were also expected to be shut, according to easyJet, which added that it expected to cancel more flights.

Ryanair said it had axed all its flights in and out of the German airports of Bremen, Lubeck and Magdeburg until early on Wednesday afternoon.
