Comtel Air has cancelled its flights between Birmingham and Amritsar this weekend after passengers on one of its flights at the weekend claimed they had to pay extra to refuel the plane.

The decision comes despite the fact that some of its UK-based customers have still not been flown home, and the passengers battle to be reimbursed for the money they claim they paid for fuel on a flight from Amritsar to Birmingham.

Only one of the Austrian airliner's scheduled flights from Amritsar to Birmingham took off last weekend, leaving many passengers stranded in India.

Passengers flying on the one flight that did eventually depart from the Indian city say they were forced to fork out £20,000 for fuel after being stranded on the airport tarmac in Vienna for six hours.

The flight, which should have arrived in Birmingham on Saturday, eventually touched down in the Midlands on Tuesday morning.

A Birmingham Airport spokeswoman admitted that the airline had confirmed that this weekend's flights between Birmingham and Amritsar had been cancelled.
