Bargain shoppers 'should fly to us'

Britons looking for a bargain or two in their Christmas shopping should head across the pond to Boston and the Big Apple, a guide has claimed.

The shopping guide by Post Office Travel Money said the best offers included prices for 10 typical Christmas gifts being 49 per cent cheaper in Boston than in London which was also outdone in value for money by New York and Las Vegas. Some of the items in the US were 62 per cent cheaper than in the UK.

The 10 typical items surveyed included an Apple iPod Nano, Ray-Ban sunglasses and women's jeans, and cost £664 in Boston, £710 in Las Vegas, £716 in New York and £1,296 in London. But the guide did find some men's jeans and perfumes cost more in New York than London.

However, prices stateside were low enough for two people to pool their duty free allowances of £390 and have more than enough money to buy all 10 items in any of the three American cities in the survey, said Post Office Travel Money head Sarah Munro.
