Advice published over ash cloud

ash cloud delays24/05/2011

People worried about the possible travel consequences of the ash cloud spewing into the sky from the eruption of Icelandic volcano Grimsvotn have been urged to seek out newly-published guidance released by the Association of British Insurers.

Travellers who think they might be affected are advised to contact their airline, travel agent or airport for the latest information, and if their flight is cancelled they should be entitled to a replacement flight or a full refund.

EU-based airlines must provide accommodation and meals to travellers who are delayed while waiting to catch their flights.

Travellers can now buy travel insurance policies that cover delays and cancellations arising from ash cloud following the events of 2010 that saw planes grounded when a different volcano in Iceland erupted.

Director of general insurance and health Nick Starling elaborated, stating that travel insurance was meant to work alongside and not duplicate the compensation given by airlines and tour operators.
