The biggest of apples

New York, New York! So good they named it after the English Cox. With a population of 19.5 million, there is something for everyone in one of the biggest cities of the USA. You can visit all the usual places such as the Empire State Building, The Statue of Liberty and Central Park. Or maybe go on a superhero tour, looking for all the areas that New York’s resident masked mavericks, such as Spiderman and Daredevil, called home.

Whether you’re zipping to the east coast of America for a luxury shopping weekend or intend to spend a week walking the streets of Manhattan and Harlem, Confused.com could help get you a great deal on your travel insurance. With prices from £7.94 for a single trip to America you could save money on your travel insurance with Confused.com.

New York: Did you know?

New York is ‘home’ to Sesame Street, Spiderman, The Fantastic Four, Daredevil and, of course, the Friends. One of New Yorks nicknames is Gotham, after Washington Irvine’s Salmaguni Papers, written in 1807, in which he refers to the city as such. So you could argue that New York is home to Batman as well.

The roads of Manhattan Island are based on a grid with avenues running approximately north-south and streets running approximately east-west (they’re actually 30 degrees off geographic north). Other areas of New York are also on a grid but don’t follow the naming convention quite so strictly.

The ‘Manhattanhenge’ effect is a phenomenon borne of the islands grid system of roads. For fifteen minutes twice a year, certain streets of New York are illuminated by the setting sun – the sun is just above the horizon and shines directly down the street. It is named after the famous alignment of sun and stone and Stonehenge that occurs every spring and autumn equinox.
