The preparations have been made, and you’re off! Here are a few more things to keep in mind when you get to where you’re going...
When you arrive at your destination
- Familiarise yourself with where the main services and amenities are – beyond just shops and bars! Find out where the nearest medical facilities are primarily, and also your nearest post office and police station.
- Find out if it’s safe to drink the water. If you’re not sure, you could drink bottled water. Also avoid taking ice in your drinks if in any doubt.
- Don’t leave your possessions unattended or with strangers.
If your possessions are stolen
- If you have your wallet, passport or anything else pinched, then be sure to report it to the local police immediately. Even if you don’t think there’s any chance it’ll be recovered, you will need an incident number in order to claim on your insurance. Be sure to obtain a police statement.
- If you have your credit and debit cards stolen, be sure to phone your bank to cancel them. There should be a 24-hour emergency number for instances of credit card theft.
- Contact your issuing agent immediately if you have your travellers’ cheques stolen.
- Likewise contact your travel agent or airline if you have your tickets stolen.
- If your passport is stolen, be sure to contact your nearest Embassy.
Driving abroad
- Make sure that your UK driving license is current and valid if you are intending to drive whilst abroad.
- Familiarise yourself with the license requirements, local driving laws and other driving conditions in the country that you’re visiting.
- Some countries may require you to have an international driving permit in addition to your UK license. Hop on the web and do a bit of research before you go!
- In many countries there are on-the-spot fines for traffic-related offences, so be warned.
