How travel insurance can help protect against snow

Whether you’re suffering from too much, or too little, snow travel insurance can help protect you.

Skiers who hit the slopes to find a lack of snow could be able to claim on their travel insurance, with some policies covering the cost of things like equipment or ski passes that are rendered useless in the event of no snow.

Likewise, trips in the UK can be covered with a UK travel insurance policy to protect against any weather-related disruption.

Small print

Head of travel insurance at, Kate Rose, says: “As always, the answer is to check the small print before you buy and opt for a policy that covers you for cancellations.

“Those stung by the UK’s snow last year should consider protecting themselves with a UK travel insurance policy as if you’re forced to cancel your holiday due to extreme weather conditions, you can claim back costs on your insurance.

“The same is true of those reliant on the snow for their holiday. If a lack of snow as ruined your professional snowboarding aspirations, a winter sports policy will cover you if the piste is closed.”

Snow cover

For those planning to travel over Christmas this type of cover could be particularly crucial.

Snow cover can offer customers the option of rebooking or a full refund if the travel company is unable to operate a holiday or travel arrangements.

Travel agent, Shearings has launched a scheme called Snow Assurance to protect customers from snow disruption and cancellations.

Caroline Brown, commercial director for Shearings, says: “Following the heavy snow we've experienced over the past two winters, customers are understandably looking for reassurance when booking their winter holidays as they don't want the disappointment and costs of a cancelled holiday.”
