A "love affair" between British holidaymakers and the rest of Europe may blossom due to the strengthening of the pound against the euro, it has been claimed.
Britons are booking their travel insurance, stocking up on suntan lotion and jetting off on short-haul breaks as the euro becomes better value for money, the currency index from American Express showed.
After previously staying away from mini-break destinations, UK holidaymakers will mostly be jetting to Spain this summer, as it remains the number one package holiday destination, with Turkey and Egypt increasing in popularity.
Terry Perrin, of American Express global foreign exchange services, said: "For the second quarter in a row, the euro has steadily increased in terms of volume, and if sterling continues to appreciate against the euro, we could see the love affair with Europe blossom - perhaps back to the pre-recession levels."
Long-haul destinations such as Australia, the United Arab Emirates and China have seen a decrease in popularity, while countries outside the eurozone, such as Hungary, Denmark and Croatia, are experiencing a boost in Britons on short-stay breaks.
