British Gas
British Gas, also known as Nwy Prydain in Wales and Scottish Gas in Scotland, is the country's leading energy supplier to households and businesses. It currently supplies over 11 million homes with gas and over 6 million homes with electricity.
The company says its vision is to provide the best value energy and the highest quality services expertise in the country.
On the green energy front, British Gas claims its electricity has the lowest CO2 emissions of all the major suppliers. The company also states a commitment to providing renewable, sustainable energy, and initiatives include micro-generation technologies such as cell-powered household boilers.
British Gas is part of Centrica plc, a UK quoted FTSE 100 energy company, and its supply business is supported by its energy trading and energy storage businesses. The group is also involved in related energy activities in the United States, Canada and some continental Europe markets.
History
Following deregulation in 1997, British Gas, then the nation's monopoly gas supplier, was demerged into two separate companies - one concerned with upstream gas and oil businesses, and the other concerned with energy supply and related activities. The latter company was called Centrica.
Please Note: Switching gas or electricity supplier will NOT affect your British Gas boiler and central heating service contract (sometimes called British Gas 3 star cover). Your service contract is completely separate and will continue to run unaffected, regardless of your energy supplier.
