ScottishPower
Established over half a century ago, ScottishPower is now part of an energy group involved in gas and electricity supply, and electricity generation, transmission and distribution. ScottishPower employs some 24,000 staff worldwide and serves over five million gas and electricity customers in the UK.
The company maintains four distinct business arms:
- Energy Wholesale - ScottishPower's diverse generation portfolio includes the UK's leading wind farm operator.
- Energy Retail - ScottishPower supplies gas and electricity to over five millon homes and businesses in the UK
- Energy Networks - ScottishPower owns and operates an electricity transmission and distribution network
- PPM Energy - ScottishPower is the number two wind farm developer
On the green energy front, the company was recently granted planning consent - the first to be approved by the new Scottish Government - for the £200 million Harestanes windfarm in Dumfries and Galloway. This project's 71 turbines have a potential 213MW capacity, and will provide enough green energy for around 120,000 households.
Bigger still is the forthcoming Whitelee project, which will be Europe's largest windfarm. Sited at Eaglesham, south of Glasgow, the 140 turbines will have a capacity of 322MW. This will provide enough green energy to power 180,000 homes, and will go a long way towards meeting ScottishPower's renewable targets.
