Ecotricity

The Renewable Energy Company (which trades as Ecotricity) started in 1995 and, as the name suggests, is involved in the generation and supply of renewable electricity. Ecotricity's main purpose is to combat climate change through changing the way electricity is made.

Based in Gloucestershire, Ecotricity is 'the world's first green electricity company' and the largest alternative supplier of electricity in Europe. The company has been involved in the supply of green energy since 1996, first to businesses (including the Body Shop and Co-Op Bank) and then to the home market from 2003.

Ecotricity has primarily invested in building wind turbines in the UK (£25 million invested in 2007) to generate renewable sustainable electricity. It has also invested in solar power initiatives and is looking into harnessing wave energy.
