Home Improvers Run Risk of Insurance Invalidation! | Cheap Car Insurance and Home Insurance from Confused.com
New research from www.confused.com – the UK’s leading online insurance search engine – has revealed that a massive 81% of people building extensions or having work done on their homes are running the risk of invalidating their home insurance.
According to Confused.com if you fail to inform your insurer that builders are on site and you suffer accidental damage as a result of the work, your insurer may only pay out a reduced amount or, worse, refuse to pay for the claim full stop!
Many home owners will be shocked by this news, either because they simply hadn’t realised that their insurer needed to be informed or because they currently have builders on site and are running the risk of non-payment on claims for accidental damage.
Commenting on the findings Debra Williams, Managing Director of Confused.com said: “All too often people risk invalidating their home insurance because they fail to inform their insurer that they have a builder working on their property.
“The best advice is to notify your insurer as soon as you know that you will be undertaking building work at your home. This way your home insurance cover will remain intact and any accidental damage that builders cause through their work will also be covered. In some cases this may result in an increase in your insurance premiums, but that cost will pale into insignificance if an accident takes place while builders are on site, and your insurer uses this as a reason not to pay a claim.“
