7 of the most memorable car ads

From Renault's famous French father and daughter to dancing chickens, here are seven of the most memorable car adverts of all time.

 Best car ads

When it comes to advertising, simply showcasing a car's features is not enough - it takes more to make an ad memorable.

So whether you love them or loathe them, here's our pick of seven of the most memorable car adverts of all time.

1. Renault Clio - Nicole & Papa

This is the most memorable of them all, according to a straw poll of the office.

Renault's series of adverts following the adventures of fictional French characters Nicole and her papa ran between 1991 and 1998.

2. Honda - The Cog

This popular Honda ad launched in 2003 and featured an assembly line of moving Honda Accord parts, to the tune of The Sugarhill Gang's Rapper's Delight

3. VW Golf - Paula Hamilton advert

This Volkswagen commercial featured a love-spurned Paula Hamilton and is perhaps one of the most iconic car adverts of the 1980s.

4. Peugeot - The Sculptor

This amusing advert from Peugeot sees a man "sculpting" his car into the shape of a 206, by any means possible.

5. Renault Megane - I See You Baby

This, err, rather provocative advert from Renault seeks to play on the Megane's distinctive rear-end.

It seems it irritated as many as it amused in the office - hence its inclusion in our memorable car ads feature.

6. Skoda - Full of lovely stuff

Skoda's feel-good advert from 2007 shows bakers cooking up a car that's good enough to eat set to the sound of My Favourite Things from The Sound of Music.

7. Mercedes Benz - Intelligent Drive 'Chicken'

This advert begins with a chicken, held by gloved hands, showing off its hypnotic ability to keep its head still while being moved to the beat of Diana Ross's Upside Down.

The ad highlights Mercedes' new suspension system called Magic Body Control, that aims to deliver a comfortable ride, regardless of the road surface.

As far as car ads go, it's certainly memorable. But not everyone is a fan it seems.

As motoring journalist Maria McCarthy says: "I don't want to see chickens in a car advert, I want to see cars!"
