The Great Car Insurance Purge

If you are thinking of detoxing all aspects of your life in 2008, then there’s no reason to stop at eating more fruit and occasionally taking a sauna down at the gym. If you also flush out your car insurance policy, you may find that you save a few quid into the bargain.

Shop around! Shop around!

The best way to detox your car insurance is to not allow it to gather moss come renewal time. Even if you saved money on your last renewal, if you shop around you may find that you can save even more. Or – better still – let Confused.com do the shopping around for you. We will go to 97% of all online car insurers to ensure you get a great deal.

We save motorists over £200 on average on their car insurance* – a nice little saving for the New Year. This could be the perfect way to start relieving that post-Christmas financial hangover.

Could your job title save you money?

When looking for a car insurance quote online, did you know that describing the same job differently could save you a nice little chunk of money? You could shave a generous portion off your premium – without being naughty.

For example, describing your job as an ‘office worker’ is likely to get you a cheaper quote than ‘computer programmer’. And you are likely to get a cheaper premium by describing yourself as a ‘tree feller’ instead of a ‘lumberjack’.

Do bear in mind however that Confused.com urges motorists not to lie when obtaining insurance quotes or purchasing polices. Providing false information can invalidate a policy and could prevent a claims payout. Not only could motorists end up severely out of pocket, but may be listed as fraudulent on a central fraud database. This could affect an individual’s credit eligibility, significantly increase insurance premiums and reduce the number of insurers willing to provide cover.

The road to excess

If you know yourself to be a safe driver, raising your voluntary excess could cause your premiums to plummet. This is because, given a larger excess, the financial risk that the insurer undertakes is lessened significantly. This is, of course, a gamble. Although paying lower premiums is certainly attractive, it is important to agree a level of excess that one can afford in the event of a claim.

I will drive 5000 miles (and I will drive 5000 more)

When filling out your renewal form, don’t guesstimate your mileage. You can make a fairly accurate calculation by comparing the mileage on your last two MOT certificates. The less mileage you do, the less likely the insurer will think it is that you’ll have an accident – hence reducing your premium.

Double up!

You may reduce your premiums by adding an experienced driver with a full clean driving license and good no claims history to your insurance. This could be a parent, a partner, or a pal.

Avoid pimping

If you want to keep your premiums down, avoid buying a car with modifications or making any modifications yourself. Plus, larger engines will pump up your premium (and your road tax, for that matter). So, if you want to slim down, stick to a small car with a small engine. This also has the added detox bonus of being friendlier to the environment.

Take your foot off the gas

The more points you accumulate for speeding, the higher your quotes will be. So why not take your foot off the accelerator? In addition, this will make you safer, and plus – what’s the rush?

With any luck, following these detox steps should lead to a healthy, revitalised, better value insurance policy in 2008. Just don’t spend the savings on booze and pies…
