A new CO2 database will make it easier for new-vehicle buyers to cut their emissions and save on cash, it has been revealed.
The online database, launched by Transport Secretary Andrew Adonis, is the biggest of its kind in Europe and has been set up to allow users to compare the CO2 emissions and the fuel consumption of new van models on the UK market.
This will help hard-pressed businesses - already looking to save cash on cheaper van insurance - cut costs through efficiency savings while at the same time staying `green`.
The information bank has been compiled by the Vehicle Certification Agency, Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, and the Department for Transport.
About 15% of road transport emissions in the UK is due to vans. It has been calculated that if every new van sold was the most fuel efficient model in its class, the average buyer could save up to 17% on both CO2 emissions and fuel costs.
Launching the database, Lord Adonis said: "It's important to help motoring consumers make the right choice, both for themselves and for the environment.
"This database is good news for van buyers - it gives them access to emissions and fuel consumption information that could well shape the van they choose, as well as enable them to cut emissions and save money."
