The Government is backing a new study that will look at the recent growth in the number of light commercial vehicles (LCVs) on Britain`s roads.
Applications for van insurance have soared over the past 10 years thanks to a 40% increase in van traffic over the period, and there are now more than three million registered LCVs in the UK.
The study by government advisory group the Commission for Integrated Transport (CfIT) will look at how the LCV market is organised and regulated, and its likely future growth.
It will also examine the implications of such growth for congestion, road safety and the environment, and will consider how CO2 emissions could be mitigated.
Study leader Richard Turner, former chief executive of the Freight Transport Association, commented: "There remains a real lack of knowledge about this sector which is often unloved by motorists, pedestrians and regulators.
"This study will be one of the first attempts to really get to grip with this complex area, to find out why there has been so much growth and to assess the impacts of any likely future growth in the market."
